PROGRAMMES OFFERED AT THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

  1. 1.      Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBchB)

OVERVIEW

Philosophy

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBchB) Programme at Egerton University trains, equips and natures students into ethical health care professionals with a scholarly appreciation of the normal and abnormal health state and prepares them to make a lasting contribution within the local community and worldwide as leaders in Health care practice, research and innovation.

GOAL OF THE PROGAMME

The goal of this programme is to equip the learners with the knowledge, skills and attitude to effectively manage diseases conditions, conduct research and participate in community Health programme design and disease prevention

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME

By the end of the programme for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBchB), the graduates will have acquired knowledge and skills to be able to:

        i.To identify and differentiate the normal  Health state from the diseased Health state

        ii. Manage, prevent and  actively participate in disease prevention and promotion within the community.

        iii.Conduct community diagnosis and research.

        iv.Manage and be a leader in the Health care institutions and community.

        v.Plan and implement training/educational programmes for the community and Heath workers.

        vi. Apply ethical, legal, and behavioral (attitudinal) principles in the practice of medicine.

MODE OF DELIVERY

This is a fulltime day face to face programme

Duration: 6 years

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates wishing to apply for the MBchB programme  shall have met the minimum University  entry requirements as stipulated in the University statute, applicants must have attained  a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade of B(PLUS) or its equivalent and passed in the subject cluster with B(plus) and above as indicated bellow

  1. Biology                                             B(plus)
  2. Chemistry                                        B(plus)
  3. Mathematics or Physics                B(plus)
  4. English or Kiswahili                        B(plus)

OR

General certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced level or its equivalent with a minmum of two principle passes and above in Biology and Chemistry and a subsidiary pass in Mathematics or Physics.

             OR

Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery who have passed with at least a  ‘credit’ and above plus mean grade of  C (plain) in KCSE or equivalent from an institution recognized by Egerton Universty Senate. Clinical officers with a higher National diploma in a related discipline who will need to enroll in this progamme will have an added advantage.

              OR

Have a degree in a relevant health related medical course with ‘credit’ and above mean grade of C(plain) in KCSE or its equivalent from an institution recognized by Egerton University senate.

The following  Kenya Universities and Collages Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) cluster subjects are required:

          i Subject 1: BIOLOGY

          ii.Subject 2:CHEMISTRY

          iii. Subject 3: MATH or PHYSICS

          iv.  Subject 4: ENG/KIS or 3rd GROUP 11 or any GROUP 111 or any GROUP 1V or any GROUP V.

The University rules and regulations  shall apply for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery progamme as stipulated in the University statutes.

MODERATION OF EXAMINATIONS

Moderation of examination for both internal and external moderation will be in accordance to ISO procedure EU/AA/OP/07 and Egerton University statutes 36 (5) of 2013.

2.      BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CLINICAL MEDICINE

Philosophy

Bachelor  of Science in Clinical Medicine  Programme at Egerton University trains, equips and natures students into ethical health care professionals with a scholarly appreciation of the normal and abnormal health state and prepares them to make a lasting contribution within the local community and worldwide as leaders in Health care practice, research and innovation.

GOAL OF THE PROGAMME

 The goal of these programme is to equip the learners with the knowledge , skills and attitude to harness and implement clitical skills, conduct research and be able to advance academically in order to provide and improve the Health delivery from rural health facilities all the way to the National and International levels.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon completion of the prescribed course of the study for Bachelor  of Science in Clinical Medicine  , the graduates will have acquired knowledge skills to be able to:

        i.Demonstration of professionalism in decision making, clinical reasoning within the Health care system

        ii.Demonstration of clinical skills, practical procedures, patient investigations and management skills.

        iii.Demonstration of research skills to promote Community Health and Disease control

        iv.Application of ethical, legal and behavioral (attitudinal) principles in the practice of Clinical Medicine.

      v. Demonstration of leadership, managerial skills and enhancement of personal, academic and professional development.

Duration: 4 years

Candidates wishing to apply for the Bachelors degree in Clinical Medicine  programme  shall have met the minimum University  entry requirements as stipulated in the University statute, applicants must have attained  a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade of B(MINUS) or its equivalent and passed in the subject cluster with B(minus) and above as indicated bellow

  1. 3.      BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSCN)

Philosophy

Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme at Egerton University prepares competent graduate nurses with qualities to enable them function effectively in provision of quality health services to the individual, family and community and who is actively involved in research and nursing education in dynamic society.

GOAL OF THE PROGAMME

 The goal of these programme is to equip the learners with the knowledge , skills and attitude to harness and implement clinical  skills, conduct research and be able to advance academically in order to provide and improve the Health delivery from rural health facilities all the way to the National and International levels.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon completion of the prescribed course of the study for Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the graduates will have acquired knowledge skills to be able to:

        i. Assess and appropriately recognize the Health needs of a population and plan for the necessary interventions.

        ii.   Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the management of patients and clients in diverse Health care setting               using the Nursing process.

       iii. Participate in design, development and implementation of training curricula

        iv. Manage , monitor and evaluate programmes

        v. Participate in the design, implementation, utilization and critique of research.

         vi.Apply critical thinking skills for problem solving and decision making.

        vii. Participate in inter-sectoral, multy-displinary and collaborative  teams in the provision of Health care

  1. Apply concepts and principles of teaching and learning to individuals, families and communities in Nursing training institution and/Health care setting.

        ix.  Apply the emerging  concepts, principles and theories in nursing Health care.

Philosophy

Human nutrition department innovatively influences human development through holistic education and generation, acquisition, preservation and dissemination of knowledge and skills, with emphasis on NUTRITION and related disciplines. The department provides equal opportunity in producing competitive and hands on graduates that contribute to national and global development.

GOAL OF THE PROGAMME

 The goal of these programme is to equip the learners with the knowledge , skills and attitude to harness and implement clinical skills, conduct research and be able to advance academically in order to provide and improve the Health delivery from rural health facilities all the way to the National and International levels.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon completion of the prescribed course of the study for Bachelor  of Science in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics  , the graduates will have acquired knowledge skills to be able to:

        i. Counsel individuals or communities on proper food choices to promote Health eating, prevent malnutrition or manage diet related conditions.

      ii.  Demonstrate expertise in food utilization and preservation to improve food and nutrition security and overall nutritional status of the community.

     iii. Undertake research in emerging issues in the areas of Food , Nutrition and Dietetics.

    iv.  Establish entrepreneurial activities in the areas of Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics

MODE OF DELIVERY

This is a fulltime programme

Duration: 4 years

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Candidates wishing to apply for the Bachelors degree in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics programme  shall have met the minimum University  entry requirements as stipulated in the University statute, applicants must have attained  a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade of C(plus) or its equivalent and passed in the subject cluster with C(plus) and above as indicated bellow

Chemistry C (plus)

Mathematics or Physics  C (plus)

Geography or any of the group 1V subjects

        i. A candidate with a diploma in related areas from a recognized institution may be admitted, provided that they passed at credit level and above.

      ii. Admission is also open to other degree holders with minmum entry requirements.

POST GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Masters of Science in Nutritional Sciences

Philosophy

Human nutrition department innovatively influences human development through holistic education and generation, acquisition, preservation and dissemination of knowledge and skills, with emphasis on NUTRITION and related disciplines. The department provides equal opportunity in producing competitive and hands on graduates that contribute to national and global development.

GOAL OF THE PROGAMME

 The course is designed to prepare students for teaching and research positions in colleges and Universities, students are also prepared for research , consultancy and administrative positions in private and public sectors, including Hospitals and communities that require advanced training.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon completion of the prescribed course of the study for Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics  , the graduates will have acquired knowledge skills to be able to:

        i.Demonstrate expertise in solving Nutrition  problems in different areas of Human Nutrition ;

        ii. Undertake research in emerging issues in the areas of Human Nutrition.

        iii. Undertake administrative and consultancy services in areas of Human Nutrition.

SPECIALIZATION

The pragramme offers two areas of specialization, from which the candidate shall choose one these are;

  1. Human Nutrition
  2. Dietetics

The specialized learning outcomes shall be able to:

  • Human Nutrition option

      i.Demonstrate expertise in solving nutrition problems in the community

      ii.Undertake research in emerging issues in the areas of Human Nutrition.

      iii.Undertake administrative and consultancy services in areas of Human Nutrition.

       iv. Plan for community nutrition programmes  or projects to alleviate or address nutritional concerns in the community

  • Dietetics option

        i. Demonstrate expertise in solving nutrition and clinical issues in institutions, organizations, and community areas where they practice through current practices in medical nutrition therapeutic management of nutrition related diseases.

       ii. Undertake research in emerging issues in the areas of Clinical nutrition and Dietetics

       iii.  Carry out consultancy services  in the areas of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics.

       iv.  Plan for clinical nutrition and dietetics intervations progammes or projects to elleviate or mitigate nutrition concerns.

MODE OF DELIVERY

This is a fulltime and partime programme

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Candidates for M.Sc. degree in Human Nutrition are required to have an upper Second Class Honours degree or Equivalent in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics or related programme from egerton University or any other institution recognized by the Egerton University senate.

FEE STRUCTURE

Tuition Fees: 137,000 pa

Study centre; Nakuru town Campus  and Njoro Campus

             EXAM REGULATIONS

The University rules and regulations shall apply for MSc. Food, Nutrition and Dietetics progamme as stipulated in the University statutes.

MODERATION OF EXAMINATIONS

Moderation of examination for both internal and external moderation will be in accordance to ISO procedure EU/AA/OP/07 and Egerton University statutes.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES

Philosophy

Human nutrition department innovatively influences human development through holistic education and generation, acquisition, preservation and dissemination of knowledge and skills, with emphasis on NUTRITION and related disciplines. The department provides equal opportunity in producing competitive and hands on graduates that contribute to national and global development.

GOAL OF THE PROGAMME

The programme aims at giving students an advanced understanding of Human Nutrition at a Doctorate level . The course is designed to prepare students for teaching and research positions in colleges and Universities, Students are also prepared for research, consulting and administrative positions in private and public sectors, including Hospitals and community that require advanced training . It will be achieved through lectures, practical /tutorials and training in research.

 PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME

The graduates of the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Human Nutrition at the end of the study should have knowledge and skills to be able to:

PLO 1:Conduct teaching and research in Colleges and Universities.

PLO 2: Plan and conduct research  on Nutritional Sciences

PLO 3: Undertake consultation in private and public sectors, including Hospitals and the community that require advanced training

PLO 4: Monitor and evaluate Nutritional Health programmes.

Duration: 3 years

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

  • Candidates for M.Sc. degree in Human Nutrition are required to have an upper Second Class Honours degree or Equivalent in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics or related programme from Egerton University or any other institution recognized by the Egerton University senate.
  • Present a preliminary (5-page) research proposal acceptable to the department of Human Nutrition.
